September 25 Beware of PhishingBeing my first technical Blog, thought of sharing my views on the latest hot thing on hacking/Internet fraud. Yeah, This is about Phishing.
Ok, what is Phishing? The act of sending a e-mail to a user falsely claiming to be an established legitimate enterprise in an attempt to scam the user into surrendering private information that will be used for identity theft. For example, e-mails would be sent to sent to the 'users of e-bay' mentioning with the false 'from' name as 'e-bay' that they have to click on a link which mimics a legitimate site and update their personnal informations like password, credit card etc. After entering the data this false website might redirect the user to the legitimate site but meanwhile the users information is hijacked. So the identity of the user is stolen and phisher can use the users account without the knowledge of the real user.
How do the phishers do it? Creating an website link asking for the username, password mimicing the original websites are not a big deal but ofcourse they cannot get the legitimate URL. So, to dupe the users, they have multiple ways of decoys.
1. For www.amazon.com , the phishing site would be http://nmrdl2.dbs.nus.edu.sg/.../www.amazon.com/index.html.
2. For www.bankofamerica.com, the phishing site would be www.bank0famerica.com. 3. For www.hotmail.com, the phishing site would be www.hotmail.com In the first case, the URL contains the same address of the legitimate site (www.amazon.com) but the Domain of the URL is some junk (nmrdl2.dbs.nus.edu.sg). In the second case, the domain appears to be same but they aren't. If you closely watch the phishing URL, there is a '0' instead of 'o' in the URL. In the third case the real and phishing site are the same. Confusing? Well, when you click on the phishing URL, it would take you to http://182.21.32.5 instead of www.hotmail.com.
Ingenious isin't? Well if we users are careless while navigating the internet, we can end up providing all our bank information and other personal information to some stranger.
How to get away from this? First and foremost thing is to be AWARE about this phishing scam. Hence we need to be careful while providing important data over the Internet. People in the browzing industry are trying their level best to fight this. Firefox has a Phishing filter and IE 7.0 is comeing up with a phishing filter too. The browzers identify a phishing site by refering to their central repository of such sites. September 22 The Invincible ChelseaWell, here is my one of the first articles and I'm choosing it to write about one of my all time favorite teams. It is none other than "Chelsea Football Club". CFC, hence forth I would be calling them, are neither invincible like Man U who won eight premiership league titles in thirteen years nor an ever attacking team like their neighboring club from the same city "Gunners". The guys from stamford bridge have a mix of attacking game in the form of Damien Duff and Robben and unvulnerable defense of tall John Terry and robust portugese Carvalho along with the class act of Lampard. This wonderful team is led by a dynamic Jose Mourinho and saved by the Wall Peter Cech. Wait a minute, I'm just talking about the current players. Are you thinking that I'm just impressed by the multi million dollars spent on the players which facilitated the club to win their first premiership title in 50 years last year? No. I've been an ardent follower of the Blues since Ruud Gullit made a strong foundation for the team in 1996. In the recent years, the club found its most benevolent care taker in the form of Russian oil tycoon Roman Abrahamovich. I thank him a lot as he is one of the main factors which made the club to emerge as the best team in Europe which is quite debatable when there are clubs like AC Milan, Real Madrid in the neighbouring countries. This West London team was founded in 1905 and was the first English team to win all their matches till semi final in a champions league seaon. They achieved this feat in last years edition of UEFA champions cup. There is a notable difference in the team between Ranieri's tenure and Mourinho's. Under Ranieri, they were more rustic with raw talent. Mourinho has shaped the players very well to fit them in their roles perfectly fine assisted by some astute buy powered by oil's money. They play defensive against teams like Real Madrid or Barcelona which is required very much as otherwise there would be a flurry of goals and they play offensive against the italian, german teams like Juventus or Bayern Munich. It's fun to watch them play against some good teams on a giant plasma screens and with some ManU fans who might not like to watch the Blues butcher the Reds ;-).
This weeks score : Chelsea 2 - Charlton 0. Once again Chelsea is leading the premiership position with 18 points on 6 matches (100%) which includes a match against Arsenal. Its going to be some fun to watch them atleast for some years to come. Now they are called the "Real Madrid" of England. But it's not far when we are going to call Real Madrid as "Chelsea" of Spain.
